Why Law of Attraction Teachings are BS
(and why I no longer follow it)

Updated January 10, 2025
Intro
There’s a lot of talk in the spiritual community about the law of attraction. That with positive thinking and focusing on your desires, you can have whatever you want in life. That our thoughts create both the good and the bad.
Before I go into this controversial topic, I want to address a key point. As beings of light, WE DO have the power to create many things on this planet and that does include our reality.
Positive thinking, going after your dreams and creating your reality are all important. But know that many factors affect your experience on the planet including your own karma, processing of both current life and past life traumas, the planet’s evolution, etc. Some of us are even healing traumas for the planet or whole groups of people.
Many teachings encourage ignoring all the bad stuff and spiritually bypassing beyond it. The true spiritual path involves striking a balance between healing traumas and knowing when to elevate into a higher reality.
It isn’t always easy to know what to do when. This is a topic I will write more about as I learn more on my own path. For me personally, I can say that every “law of attraction” teacher I’ve worked with is tied up into spiritual bypassing or trying to loop people further into the dark, 3D matrix.
My Experience with Law of Attraction Teachings
I was someone who grabbed onto the law of attraction concept with both hands believing that I could be, do or have whatever I wanted in life. I was thinking positively, saying affirmations, and living from a “high vibrational” state as often as I could.
I followed the popular law of attraction teachings from Esther Hicks or Abraham Hicks. I also worked closely with numerous angel teachers who focused on manifesting.
I firmly held the knowing that if I kept doing all of the right things, the life of my dreams was going to appear at any moment…. Until it didn’t.
My life came crashing down with the deaths of both of my parents in a short time. My world fell apart in every way that it could and I started to question the spiritual path I was on.
Abraham Hicks would say that I attracted this. In fact, they have gone so far as to say that things like the holocaust, wars, natural disasters and cancer were all “created’ by the thoughts of those involved. (For the record, natural disasters, wars, etc are usually attacks by the dark.)
Despite everything falling apart, I still believed in the law of attraction. Every so often, some small material item I wanted would come in. Something just big enough to keep me believing in manifesting. At times I had doubts, especially when I was chronically ill and all the positive energy in the world wasn’t making me better.
Manifesting and attracting was so widely repeated across many teachings that I took it, or at least part of it, as truth. That was until I awakened to the dark or false light in the spiritual community and my eyes opened.
I now see these teachings as spiritual bypassing and not at all the true spiritual path. What was actually happening is I was on the karmic path my soul set out for me and no amount of focusing on my desires would change that. (I’ll get into this more in future posts.)
Below are some reasons why the law of attraction teachings are BS and far from real spirituality:
- Law of Attraction Thinking is Entitled and Elitist – The focus on the law of attraction is really treating life from the perspective of a two year old who expects to get what they want. Much of the teachings focus on material things or having the perfect partner, house, career, etc.
There is no consideration for the big picture and how our choices affect others and the planet. Let’s say someone “manifests” their dream home. Yet in order to build that home numerous trees were killed. And the workers building the home were likely paid low wages for hard labor.
In truth, what occurs on the planet has to be for the highest good of ALL not just for your own life. In addition, law of attraction teachings don’t focus on creating a planet that is filled with light, peace and hope. - Spiritually Bypasses Using Positivity– Law of attraction says that negative thoughts create negative outcomes. I have to say that if that were true, many of us (myself included), would be much worse off in life. I can say I’ve had times where I’ve been in a negative place and had good things happen!
The thing with lower emotions is they can be cues to where processing of trauma needs to take place. You are not doing something wrong for feeling lousy. In fact, not allowing yourself to feel and work through lower emotions can make life harder, not easier.
In addition, constantly trying to get away from lower emotions or bad thoughts and replace them with positivity can be crazy making.
It is important to know that the dark does interfere with our thoughts. You can read more about that here. - Gives a False Sense of Control Over Life – Teachings around the law of attraction give people the impression that one has complete control over life. You cannot just “will” certain things to happen just because you want them to. When life shows you this, disappointment shows up.
Living with the mentality that we attracted or created something bad, results in self-blame and guilt. It may even feel like the universe is punishing you because you weren’t perfect at manifesting your dreams.
People in horrible situations such as war-torn countries, abusive relationships, terminal illness, etc. didn’t “manifest” that life for themselves and it is just cruel to say otherwise. - Law of Attraction is Fake Spirituality – Focusing on “attracting” the perfect life is not what your soul came here to do.
The true spiritual path is often difficult. It includes many ups and downs. It is something you laid out before you came here. You came to learn specific lessons that you set out for yourself. Often that can include going through challenges. It’s not about manifesting the picture-perfect life.
I’m sorry but you didn’t make the plan for your life and say – I’m going to have a house with a three-car garage, a swimming pool and I’ll get the man or woman of my dreams. Spirituality that focuses on material things is NOT spirituality.
These teachings take the real concept of being able to create and use it as a way to limit lightworkers and trap them in the 3D matrix. - The Dark Uses LOA as Distraction– Bad things happening on the planet are attacks by the dark. Manifesting teachings are there to distract us from what is really happening and to prevent a new earth from being born. These teachings give the false impression that lightworkers are doing something to help the world by “creating” the life they want.
You didn’t come here to be small or focus on yourself. As someone who came here to be light, you have powerful abilities. You came here to help create a new earth. And sometimes that means your life won’t look the way you think it should. - Closes You Off From Experiencing What is Meant for You – you become so focused on trying to create your vision that you don’t stay open to the life that is meant for you. You may fail to recognize the good in your life because it isn’t the picture you had in mind.
- Law of Attraction Teachings are Cult-Like– These teachings have many characteristics of a cult. They are about controlling the audience. Any kind of dissent of these beliefs are twisted and shut down. Often the shutting down happens in what appears to be an understanding and nice way. There are strict rules that must be followed. If life doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, it is your fault for not following the rules to a T. Many followers echo this and are some of the more controlling people I’ve come across. If you’ve interacted with any hardcore Abraham Hicks fans you know what I’m talking about.
You Don’t Need to “Attract” Your Soul’s Path
You came here for a specific purpose. There is nothing you can do to force life in a certain direction. I’m not going to sugar coat it, at times this path is difficult.
But you experience more growth, satisfaction and fulfillment as you walk your true spiritual path. It is what you came here to do and is more fulfilling than anything the 3D world can provide you. The good news is this means you don’t have to work so hard to make life happen.
If it is your soul’s path you don’t actually have to do anything to “attract” it in!
My Life Without the Law of Attraction
Once I got out of the law of attraction thinking, it became much easier to see it for what it really was. And many of the desires and dreams I thought I wanted shifted. I felt relieved. There isn’t this constant pressure to think or do the right thing. I carry around much less guilt because of that.
Leaving “manifesting mentality” behind gives me permission to live a simpler life. My focus shifted off of material things. I appreciate what I truly have. And I was able to discover my true purpose and path because I no longer had these distractions.
I am allowing myself to experience the path I laid out before coming to the planet. And I do my best to surrender to the ups and downs.
I still have dreams but they are ones that are focused on the new earth and benefitting all rather than meeting my earthly desires.
I’m learning to strike a balance between processing and healing traumas and creating my reality. Stay tuned for more on this topic.
Roberta, thank you, your words are so fresh and revealing. I appreciate what you have offered.
Thank you for the nice compliment! I’m glad you found this valuable.
